Our company, Tonolli, is one of Canada’s major battery recyclers, and the last one left in Ontario. Batteries play an essential role in our modern electronic society, but it is very important to keep them out of landfills at the end of their useful life. Careful and responsible recycling of used batteries is essential to avoid air, water, and land pollution, and to provide a sustainable source of important metals for our economy. With proper care, metals can be recycled and reused indefinitely. We recycle virtually all the metal in each battery that we receive.
Our company is locally owned, and has been a significant local employer in the Sherway and Applewood areas since 1958. Tonolli works cooperatively with United Steelworkers Local 9042.
Tonolli was purchased in 2007 by a group of local business people from the Tonolli family in Milan, Italy. This new group has many other interests in and around Toronto, Mississauga and Ontario generally including Freight forwarding, manufacturing, construction as well as Food preparation and coffee interests.
Although Tonolli Canada has always had a keen interest in safety and good environmental stewardship, by bringing the ownership group closer to home, Tonolli Canada has developed an even closer bond and commitment to the community.
Major investments in safety and environmental improvement.
The management group got to work right away. Major improvements in both the health and safety of the business and the environmental standards showed immediate results. In the last 10 years, we have spent more than $12 million to meet progressively more stringent environmental requirements set by our provincial government. This year, Ontario adopted the world’s strictest standards for lead emissions into the natural environment, and we are spending $6 million more to meet it. This will go even farther to protect the health of our employees and our neighbours, and demonstrates that environmental and public health compliance remains our number one priority. Almost all available company capital has been directed at this goal for many years. (See “Good Neighbour”).
Constant innovation and investment in the latest technologies have placed Tonolli at the forefront of green technology. Today, we are recognized as one of the leaders in environmentally friendly waste management.
Meeting the world’s toughest environmental standards.
In 2010, new environmental standards were introduced in Ontario that are the most stringent in the world. Tonolli Canada met that challenge with investments of over $12 million and introduced an education and training program to ensure that all its employees have placed environment as the key cornerstone to the Company. We are very proud to announce that we have met the new standard and continue to develop ways to lower emissions.
In addition, Tonolli is consulting with a many experienced advisors, government authorities and other agencies to ensure every opportunity to reduce its environmental impact is realized.

Tonolli Canada works closely with many partners that provide critical expertise in the fields of engineering, health and environmental sciences, and waste management. Working closely with these established experts helps Tonolli maximize recycling opportunities and ensure protection of the environment, community and employee health.
